GFRP Tech launches EnviraBar rebar product range in South Africa

18 February 2025 – GFRP Tech, the only manufacturer of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) products, has officially launched its EnviraBar rebar product range in South Africa, providing a sustainable alternative to traditional steel rebar.

Manufactured at GFRP Tech’s new state-of-the-art facility in Linbro Park, Johannesburg, EnviraBar consists of a polymer matrix reinforced with fibers and aims to replace traditional steel rebar in construction projects.

Unlike steel, EnviraBar is immune to corrosion and boasts higher tensile strength, ensuring long-term structural integrity while reducing maintenance needs. EnviraBar further reduces the risk of environmental contamination.

“We are proud to introduce this groundbreaking step forward in South Africa’s engineering and construction industry, merging innovation and engineering to prioritise sustainability in the construction sector,” says GFRP Tech CEO Allen Fiford.

EnviraBar holds many key benefits over traditional steel rebar, being significantly lighter. At a reduction of almost 75% in weight, EnviraBar is more cost-effective to transport. “This will also make the physical work easier on-site, as construction workers no longer need to struggle with heavy reinforcing,” says Fiford.

Offering tensile strengths exceeding 1,500 MPa, EnviraBar has unmatched strength and is available in diameters ranging from 6 mm to 30 mm, catering to diverse construction needs, from airport runways, to marine ports and harbours, roads and buildings. With the manufacturing and transportation of EnviraBar resulting in a 50% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions when compared to steel, it further is contributing to a greener future in construction.

“My vision has always been to make a difference, and today, I stand proud knowing GFRP-Tech is leading the way in sustainable construction,” adds Fiford.

Looking ahead, GFRP Tech recognises the need for strategic reforms and policy interventions to support the rollout of technological advancements like GFRP composites. “Let’s face it, our industry struggles to adapt to change. We often talk about sustainable development and greener solutions, but when it’s time to act, we fall short. With reforms, we will be able to grow this industry, creating jobs and economic growth for our country,” states Fiford.

He highlights that one such reform is the upcoming launch of the GFRP Institute South Africa, which will serve as a centre of excellence for education, research and the certification of GFRP applications, ensuring that engineers, architects and construction professionals are equipped with the knowledge and skills required to integrate composite technologies into modern infrastructure.
