Governance 360 Conference – inaugural event to address critical governance issues

25 April 2024: With the theme of Governance 360: Navigating and Influencing the Future of Governance, the Leadership Academy for Guardians of Governance has announced that its inaugural conference will take place on 15th May 2024 at the Hotel Sky, in Sandton.

This CPD-accredited conference is widely expected to be a watershed moment for executives charged with governance, such as  Chief Audit Executives, Chief Risk Officers, COSEC, compliance executives, audit committee members, etc. providing a platform for candid discussions and innovative solutions to contemporary challenges, explains Shirlene Siddall, CEO of the Leadership Academy for Guardians of Governance.

The upcoming conference is poised to tackle pressing issues affecting the governance arena. Regarding the agenda, Siddall elaborates on the key topics set to be explored. “The implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on governance will be unpacked. We’ll examine how AI technologies are reshaping governance practices and strategies, and discuss the potential ethical and regulatory implications.”

She also sheds light on the significance of governance in the face of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) risks: “Our discussions will illustrate how governance professionals can effectively navigate these risks while promoting sustainability and responsible business practices.”

Other key issues at the conference include cybersecurity and governance with a focus on addressing the evolving cyber threats faced by organisations and the role of governance in mitigating these risks; as well as exploring the constantly shifting landscape of governance regulations, standards, and best practices including discussions on strategies for governance professionals to adapt to these changes.

Siddall adds that this year’s event also has a focus on the mental well-being of governance executives, which is emerging as potential risk for executives. “Recognising the demanding nature of the industry, the conference aims to provide support and resources for maintaining mental wellness.”

Further, the Leadership Academy for Guardians of Governance has assembled an impressive line-up of speakers who will share their expertise and insights at the conference including Graeme Codrington, an internationally recognised futurist, specialising in the future of work, and for this conference, as it relates to governance; Professor Mervyn King, a senior Counsel and former Judge of the Supreme Court of South Africa and head of the King Committee; and Tamryn Batchellor-Adams, a Leadership consultant and co-author of Mavericks: How Bold Leadership Changes the World.

There will also be an interesting panel discussion moderated by Ingrid Ravenscroft, a well-known figure in the governance arena, with representatives of various governance-related Institutes including Arlene-Lynn Volmink, CEO of the Institute of Internal Auditors South Africa; Professor Parmi Natesan, the CEO of the Institute of Directors in South Africa; Rianné Potgieter, the CEO of the Compliance Institute Southern Africa and the Chair of the International Federation of Compliance Associations; and Dr. Liezel Groenewald, the CEO of The Ethics Institute. The Master of Ceremonies for the event is Karabo Ramookho, a seasoned professional with over two decades of leadership experience and a background in sales and  marketing in finance.

Interestingly, against a myriad of governance challenges, critical areas have been identified for an in-depth discussion in an exclusive off-the-record session, where The Chatham House Rule will apply. “This protocol allows a safe space in which top executives will be able to discuss pressing and sensitive issues off-the-record with no live streaming or cell phones allowed, or comments being attributed to an individual. Delegates will be free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed,” Siddall states. This session will be facilitated by the Dean of Henley Business School, Professor Jon Foster-Pedley.
