ICON completes work at new mall development

24 March 2022. The ICON Group reports that it has completed its scope of work on a new shopping mall development in Johannesburg’s East Rand.

Adverse weather conditions, rocky terrain and local unrest caused unexpected delays to the bulk earthworks for the Katlehong Crossing project. However, the ICON team, backed by their superior fleet of civil works equipment, were able to rise to the occasion and get the job done.

ICON was contracted for the construction of the platforms for parking areas, shop platforms of varying levels, excavation of hardstands to level, and excavation of a retention pond. As part of the contract, the site also had to be cleared of any rubble (domestic and building rubble) and a site fence was needed.

Nato Burgoffer, a foreman from the Katlehong Crossing project, explained that heavy rainfall was a major challenge. “The site received 300mm of rain in just four weeks, resulting in nine lost working days and difficult working conditions. Once the team were finally able to commence with the excavation, they encountered large dolomitic rocks, some larger than an excavation bucket.”

He adds that: “During the excavation of the retention pond and some of the hardstands, large dolomite rocks were found less than 1,5m from the natural ground surface. Some of the rocks had to be removed with a Hydraulic Hammer,” explains Burgoffer.

A range of equipment was used on this project including TLB Graders; rollers; tipper trucks; excavator; the Hydraulic Hammer and a jackhammer.

Other highlights of the project included the erection of the site fence, which greatly assisted with project efficiency as it minimised the amount of pedestrian traffic through the site.

“It was a challenging period, to say the least, but the team really pulled together to ensure that our work was completed to the highest standard, ensuring that the next phase of the mall development is set for success,” comments ICON Group MD Wayne Neary.
