Peikko gears up for productive 2025, introducing new products

27 February 2025: Peikko, a supplier of a wide selection of concrete connections and composite beams for both precast and cast-in-situ solutions, is gearing up for an exciting year ahead, with a focus on expanding its footprint both within South Africa and across its borders.

In January, the company was commissioned to set up a second and third air separation plant (ASU) at a coal mining site in the eMalahleni region.

Last year, the company was instrumental in the design and construction of the first ASU plant at this site, in collaboration with Genet Mineral Processing, which designs, fabricates and erects mineral processing, crushing and screening plants and related equipment for the mining industry.

Designed with a subframe and superstructure base, the ASU structure was built using bolted connections, instead of other connections, with the load-bearing precast concrete elements being connected by anchor bolts and column shoes, which can easily be disassembled.

This further allows for the future recovery of systems, components and materials, ensuring the structure can be reused or recycled as efficiently as possible at the end of its lifespan.

“While this method of construction is very popular abroad, it was a first of its kind in South Africa  which because of its reusability and recyclability thereby provides additional value to the clean coal mining technology utilised for this mining project. The project was very well received by the mining client and as such, we are now commencing with the second and third plant,” explains Peikko MD Daniel Petrov.

The most important benefit for the end-customer, he says, is that when a mine reaches its end of life in the next 20 years or more and the land needs to be rehabilitated to its original condition, the structures can be easily deconstructed, relocated and reassembled to wherever needed, eliminating unnecessary structure manufacture resulting in a carbon dioxide reduction and generating less rubble that would need to move to a landfill.

Petrov highlights that this building method is not just limited to the mining industry, but holds many benefits for industrial applications. “These structures can be designed to suit any local requirement and ultimately adds value to projects,” he notes.

Outside the mining industry, Peikko is particularly focusing on the development of data centres, both in South Africa and across its borders. “According to the latest reports by professional services company JLL, this sector will grow at a phenomenal pace in 2025. Based on planned developments, the global data center market will likely expand at a baseline 15% CAGR through 2027 – with the potential to reach 20%. The ease of Peikko’s products will enable these developments to go up quicker and at lower costs to developers,” notes Petrov.

Outlook for 2025

Looking ahead to the rest of the year, Peikko’s top priority will be to provide value-based solutions to their clients, that will lead to greater cost and time savings.

Having launched updated versions of its BOLDA column shoe, which has been optimised to allow for a more compact design and its HELKA column shoes, which form fast and safe bolted connections between precast concrete columns and foundations, last year. Peikko will be running this concurrently with its older versions until September this year. “We’re now kicking off with our M24 range,” adds Petrov.

“We have further improved our product range, including our BESISTA tension and compression rod bracing systems. This system is fairly new to South Africa, but we believe it will be adopted quickly,” he notes.

The outlook for 2025 indicates that there is a renewed sense of optimism and investment confidence returning to the construction market.  “As we continue to expand our reach and expertise, we will remain committed to delivering high-quality, innovative solutions that meet the diverse needs of our clients,” Petrov concludes.
