Peikko South Africa completes Cape Town-based factory project in record-breaking time

8 November 2023 – Peikko South Africa, a pioneering force in pre-cast systems, has completed a remarkable feat at the Reserve 5 Factory/Warehouse project, in one of Cape Town’s prominent industrial precincts. With an exceptional reduction in column construction time from, Peikko’s pre-cast system has set a new benchmark for efficiency and time-saving.

A major advantage of Peikko’s pre-cast system, an interlocking framework of pre-cast beams, slabs, and columns, is its unprecedented time-saving and high level of accuracy. This approach, in contrast to conventional on-site concrete or steel construction, has been instrumental in the successful completion of the Reserve 5 project, explains Winston Visser, Project Engineer at Peikko South Africa.  Notably, this endeavour marks the twelfth industrial building project in South Africa using Peikko’s cutting-edge precast technologies.

Visser sheds light on the Reserve 5 project, indicating that the single-storey factory/warehouse, spanning 5,100 m², is being erected for Cream Properties. He explains that Peikko’s role was consultative, collaborating closely with project engineers Ekcon. This is the second project in which Peikko South Africa has worked on with Ekcon, also providing design advice and calculation checking for structural, wind loading and seismic conditions.

“We provided M24 column shoes and anchors, along with installation drawings to Cape Concrete, the appointed precast subcontractor. The project featured 48 precast 300 x 900 mm columns. Once the installation drawings received Ekcon’s seal of approval, Cape Concrete efficiently manufactured the complete column inventory in a mere fortnight, producing between 8 to 12 columns per day,” he explains.

An additional week was all that was required to install the columns, which saved a massive 80 days of construction time compared with on-site column casting, benefiting the client both logistically and financially.

“From an environmental standpoint, the reduction in carbon dioxide emissions was substantial, facilitated by manufacturing in controlled conditions. Transportation of the columns to the site was streamlined, necessitating only two deliveries, in stark contrast to on-site casting, which would have entailed three daily pours spanning up to four months for completion.

“Peikko South Africa’s pre-cast system has not only expedited the completion of the Reserve 5 project but has ushered in a new era of efficiency and precision in construction practices. This monumental achievement underscores our unwavering commitment to innovation, sustainable practices, and client satisfaction,” concludes Visser.
