Peikko South Africa entrenches its footprint in Mauritius

06 February 2025: As part of its strategy to continue expanding its footprint across Africa, Peikko South Africa, a local supplier of slim floor structures and connection technology for precast and cast-in-situ construction, has successfully completed a number of projects in Mauritius in collaboration with General Construction Company (GCC).

Working together on their project, GCC – responsible for the construction of a fast-moving consumer goods facility, a major food distribution company in Port Louis, Mauritius – contracted Peikko to design, manufacture and supply bolted connection products for the large warehouse in Mauritius.

Peikko worked closely with GCC to ensure that the correct Peikko products and systems were selected for the project, which presented unique challenges, including a constrained industrial site and the need for taller structures to increase storage capacity.

Peikko’s Column Shoes and Anchor Bolts enabled the precise installation of 13-metre-high precast columns, accelerating construction progress, while reducing crane usage and ensuring uninterrupted operations.

Peikko’s HPKM® Column Shoes were cast in concrete columns in GCC’s manufacturing plant, while HPM® Anchor Bolts were cast-in-situ in pad foundations. The Bolted Connections located columns accurately, speeded construction, reduced crane time and enhanced safety by increasing accessibility on site.

Peikko South Africa MD Daniel Petrov explains that GCC had encountered challenges with traditional anchorage systems available on the Mauritian market. “The company required faster column placements, thus selecting Peikko’s precast column shoes and lifting systems for the project and enabling GCC to improve installation speed and accuracy.”

Petrov adds that Peikko’s COLIFT mounting system was also used in the project. The system is designed for safe, easy and time-saving lifting and handling of precast concrete elements such as columns or precast beams.

Giuliano Bosio, Engineering Manager at GCC says: “In the past, we found the process tedious in facilitating the placement of columns for the type of construction projects we undertake. By implementing Peikko’s innovative products, we were able to place twice as many columns per day, leading to significant time and cost savings.”

The project was completed in just seven months, setting a new benchmark for efficiency, precision and high-quality industrial construction in Mauritius. “These efficiency improvements through reduced site work and enhanced precision in column placement have been game-changing for our operations.”

The integration of Peikko’s solutions has not only made GCC more competitive in the Mauritian market but has also improved overall project quality, adds Bosio.  “By reducing construction time while enhancing project quality, we have positioned ourselves favourably against our competitors.”

GCC also opted to use Peikko’s precast technology to meet the stringent timelines in the construction of the One&Only Le Saint Géran hotel’s back-of-house renovation, which transformed the functional core of this iconic hotel, in Poste de Flacq.

Within just six months, GCC demolished, rebuilt and recommissioned a 2 500 m² kitchen. GCC opted for Peikko’s Column Shoes and Anchor Bolts, enabling the fast and precise installation of 45 precast columns forming the kitchen’s structural backbone.

In another successful project on the island, Peikko worked alongside GCC on the construction of a well-known gymnasium, replacing its aging structure with a state-of-the-art precast concrete facility.

Peikko’s bolted connections ensured rapid and accurate installation, allowing the project to be delivered in just seven months. The use of Peikko bolts for 26 column-to-base junctions enabled the placement of up to nine columns per day, maintaining steady progress on the space-constrained site.

“Guided by detailed instructions from Peikko South African team, the GCC team quickly mastered the system, streamlining the process and reducing equipment needs, notes Bossio. The result was a durable, high-quality gymnasium built with exceptional precision and efficiency.

Looking ahead, both companies see promising opportunities for future collaboration. Discussions are underway on the use of precast slab connections and other modular solutions, which could further enhance construction efficiency.

“We are excited about the future of our partnership with GCC. Together, we are setting new standards in the construction industry in Mauritius and beyond,” concludes Petrov.
