The Irreplaceable role of Human Writers: Why ChatGPT falls short

19 June 2023: In an era dominated by technological advancements, the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in various industries has grown significantly. However, when it comes to the world of writing and journalism, it is essential to recognize the unique qualities and skills that human writers and editors bring to the table.

ChatGPT, as an AI language model, may have its strengths, but it falls short in several key areas that make human involvement indispensable in the creation of newsworthy and thought leadership pieces. In unpacking this piece, SWM Communications explored the insights shared by a seasoned editor and public relations practitioner in the business sector.

Both Robin Hayes, Editor of Cape Business News, and Thabiso Dlamini, Head of Media at SWM Communications, highlight the limitations of ChatGPT and emphasize the irreplaceable value of human writers.

Creative Thought and Connecting the Dots

Human editors possess the ability to think creatively and identify opportunities by connecting the dots. Hayes explains that this skill set is crucial in creating engaging and thought-provoking content. Unlike ChatGPT, human writers bring a depth of understanding and originality that can’t be replicated by an AI system.

In-Depth Research and Fact-Checking

Hayes acknowledges that while ChatGPT can be useful in research and fact-checking as a keyword search, it falls short when it comes to in-depth research. He explains that in-depth research is vital as the article needs to be corroborated with factual and verifiable information, otherwise it is just the editor’s personal opinion or biased viewpoint.

And this is why, ‘human’ editors play a crucial role in conducting meticulous research and ensuring the accuracy of information presented in news articles. “There are some lobby groups with the ulterior motive of seeking to influence public opinion, and such organisations deliberately set up to peddle disinformation and conspiracy theories – ChatGPT cannot differentiate truth from fabrication,” he said.

Analysis and Interpretation of Complex Topics

Journalists often delve into complex subjects, providing nuanced insights and analysis. ChatGPT’s understanding and interpretation of such topics are limited, as pointed out by Hayes. Human writers possess the expertise to comprehend intricate issues, critically analyze them, and offer unique perspectives that contribute to the richness and depth of news articles.

Human Interaction and Relationship-Building

According to Hayes, integrity and credibility are essential traits of a successful editor, and cultivating a knowledgeable source is not something a bot can do. Human writers rely on their network of sources and contacts to gather information, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of their reports.

Dlamini asks some pertinent questions – who would be comfortable talking to a bot anyway, not knowing where and how his/her intelligence would be used? ChatGPT has no accountability. Who is steering the ship?

Human interaction and relationship-building are crucial for building trust and obtaining reliable information.

Handling Tight Deadlines and Breaking News

Newsrooms often face tight deadlines and the need for real-time updates and analysis during breaking news situations. Regarding ChatGPT’s ability to handle tight deadlines and provide real-time updates and analysis,  Hayes believes that being a machine, it is designed to have massive processing capacity, much more than the average human! Real-time updates and analysis – not so much.

Human writers excel in adapting to rapidly evolving situations, offering timely insights and analysis during breaking news scenarios.

Ethical Guidelines and Impartiality

The news industry follows strict ethical guidelines, including impartiality, accuracy, and avoiding conflicts of interest.

Hayes emphasizes that ChatGPT cannot ensure ethical guidelines such as impartiality, accuracy, and avoiding conflicts of interest. He says that style does bring richness to the written article, and ChatGPT can be programmed to replicate style, which is unfortunate.

Human writers bring their perspectives and experiences to their reporting, contributing to the depth and credibility of news articles while upholding ethical standards.

Investigative Journalism

Investigative journalism requires meticulous research, analysis, and interviewing skills. ChatGPT’s inability to conduct in-depth investigations or interview human sources without specific programming limits its effectiveness in uncovering hidden truths and exposing wrongdoing. Human writers possess the intuition and expertise to navigate complex investigations, distinguishing between factual information and potential falsehoods.

Data Accuracy and Bias

Dlamini emphasizes that all artificial intelligence systems are reliant on the accuracy of the data or information that has been input into the system. “How can we be sure that this data is unbiased and without prejudice? When we talk about bias, we also need to discuss context, something that we know ChatGPT is incapable of identifying.”

Emotional intelligence, which includes the ability to use common sense within a particular context is what sets human beings apart from machines. “Although ChatGPT is a highly complex and sophisticated artificial intelligence tool that can be used to great effect, it is important to acknowledge its limitations,” Dlamini adds.

While AI language models like ChatGPT have made significant strides in natural language processing, they cannot replace the unique qualities and skills that human writers and editors bring to the table.

The ability to think creatively, conduct in-depth research, analyze complex topics, establish relationships, handle tight deadlines, uphold ethical guidelines, and perform investigative journalism are crucial aspects that make human involvement indispensable in the creation of high-quality and impactful news articles.
