18 Jul Zimile remains committed to empowering the next generation of young professionals
18 July 2023: Zimile Consulting Engineers is committed to empowering youth by providing support, guidance and skills sharing. This was visible during the company’s recent involvement in the Clydesdale Senior Secondary School (SSS) Career Exhibition, held in uMzimkhulu, in KwaZulu-Natal’s Harry Gwala District Municipality.
Clydesdale SSS stages an annual careers expo for Grade 12 students to expose them to new and varied career opportunities in order to provide essential information to enable them in making key decisions related to their career for their tertiary education.
Vuyokazi Radebe – Senior Technician at Zimile, explains that the company was eager to participate at the career exhibition given that Zimile’s culture is strongly underpinned by promoting and supporting the development of young professionals.
Zimile’s ever-growing team largely comprises youth, with most employees being 35 or younger. Furthermore, approximately 45% of its staff are female. This is exceptionally peculiar in an industry that is inherently male-dominated. “We’re focused on changing the infrastructure landscape in South Africa for generations to come, and this is why it was such an honour to be a part of the Clydesdale SSS Career Exhibition.”
“The Clydesdale SSS Career Exhibition is the ideal platform to inform young learners about being a professional engineer and how they can contribute to uplifting communities by presenting it in an attractive way that truly encompasses the stimulating environment that we work in as engineers,” explained Radebe.
Furthermore, she said that participation in such events assists to cement Zimile’s relationship with the local community, while it is executing vital infrastructure projects in their area.
“Our underlying ethos, is quite unapologetically to promote our profession and increase the number and standards of professional engineers in the country, which is so starved of this critical and vital skill,” she added.
Radebe believes one solution that remains critical is the promotion of STEM education in unlocking the country’s shocking unemployment figures, which are unsustainable in a developing economy.
“By participating in the Clydesdale SSS Career Exhibition, we are ‘walking the talk’ and making a meaningful contribution to the future of these learners – this is where it starts, and we are proud to be a part of it,” Radebe concluded.
