28 Oct Royal HaskoningDHV Wins at IMESA/CESA Excellence Awards
Wednesday, 26 October 2016 Royal HaskoningDHV won yet another prestigious award for technical excellence at the biennial IMESA/CESA Excellence Awards held on Tuesday night at the 80th IMESA Conference in East London. The awards give recognition to well-engineered civil engineering projects for infrastructure. Entrants for the awards must portray the art and science of civil engineering for infrastructure to the general public and indicate how the profession finds answers to challenges. Frank Stevens, former IMESA President, presented the awards. According to Stevens, the high standard of this year’s entrants made judging the Excellence Awards a challenge.
In the category for Water and Wastewater Consultants Royal HaskoningDHV, in joint venture with two local partners, Naidu Consulting and Knight Piésold won for the Ashley Drive break pressure tank project for eThekwini Department of Water & Sanitation.
Royal HaskoningDHV, in a joint venture with local partners, designed and managed the construction of the 20 Mℓ Ashley Drive Break Pressure Tank (BPT) on the DN1400 steel Western Aqueduct pipeline which limited the pressure at the BPT to less than 20 bar and at the worst case along the pipeline to 28 bar. To handle the varying inlet pressure and flow conditions of up to 400 Mℓ/day at the BPT, a complex inlet control structure was required to mitigate transient pressures and inlet valve cavitation. In addition, a failsafe hydraulic control valve emergency closure system was provided to maintain water supply and prevent overflows during power outages. The functional design of the inlet control system was based on ease of operation and maintenance with sufficient redundancy provided for slow closure of all valves to minimise transient pressures and prevent overflows. The accommodation of the full range of design and operating conditions at the Ashley Drive BPT was a challenging prospect and the final solution with a bespoke inlet control structure met all the Client’s requirements for what is their largest and most strategic aqueduct built to date.
